TheThingsThat Bind

What is your walk with the Lord like? Can you go to Him about anything, like you would a best friend? Do you like to laugh with Him, cry with Him, and sometimes simply be quiet with Him? One of my greatest desires is to have a closer walk with my Lord. Just like with any friendship, it takes time.
My Dad and I are close. We have many things in common, and sometimes I feel that I am most like him than anyone else. We share likes and dislikes on many things, we have the same interests, and we both love coffee! I can say whole-heartily that I just love being with my Dad. I love to talk with him, work with him, watch football with him, ride in his Hummer with him… I just wish I could be with him more (Dad is the hardest working man I know). Our similarities, our daughter-father bond, our memories, and the love and respect God gives me for my Dad all contribute to our special relationship. Pondering this has made me wonder, what are the bonds I have with my heavenly Father that makes our relationship sacred?

1. Jesus Christ
I am a daughter of the King because I have been redeemed by Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Because He has broken down the middle wall of partition, I can call the King of the universe
Abba, Father.

2. The Holy Spirit
Because of Christ, I have been given the seal of the Holy Spirit. He is the Spirit of adoption whereby I cry Abba, Father. He bears witness with my spirit that I am a child of God. He gives me understanding as I read God’s Word. He reminds me of God’s Word so that I might not sin against Him. He convicts me of sin so that I may become more like Christ. He sets me apart from a lost and corrupt world.

3. The Bible
God has given me His inspired Word that I may know Him and love Him more each day. Anytime I want to, I can open this sacred book and hear from my Father! He reveals his will, comforts me, corrects me, instructs me, encourages me, and equips me to do His will through Jesus Christ. The Word of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul. It makes the simple wise. It is pure, it is truth, it is holy, it is more to be desired than gold.

4. Prayer
This is a precious treasure and gift—to be able to enter into the presence of my Father, God Almighty because of the blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ. I can come to the throne of God boldly because I come dressed in the righteousness of Christ! Whatever is on my heart, whatever requests I have, whatever burdens I carry, I can lay them all at the feet of my Father in prayer. Prayer is a joy and a delight, but also hard work! It is something that we must learn to do by God’s grace. I have much to learn about prayer, but one thing I do know: when I am communing with God (daily) in fervent prayer, this is when my relationship with Him seems to thrive.

5. Common Interests
I know I said this about my dad, but can I really say this about God too? Yes!! If I am truly a child of God, His will should be my will. So, what are God’s interests? Well, here are a few: 1) To seek and save the lost—I should have a passion for lost souls the way God does. I am to proclaim the gospel to a dying world so that many may come to repentance for His glory. 2) To be a servant—as Jesus came to serve, so am I to be in the business of serving others. 3) To bring glory to Himself—I am to bring God glory in everything I do, because this is His will in Christ Jesus. 4) To show love to others, especially the rejected of the world— God is near to the poor and broken, and so should I. As a daughter of the King, I have many things in common with my heavenly Father! It is a joy and blessing!

6. Likes and Dislikes
Before I was saved, I loved the things that God hates. I clung to that which was evil and despised that which was good. But now, because of Christ, the things I love and the things I hate resonate with my Father in heaven. The Spirit of God groans inside of me when I am confronted with wickedness. My soul hates it. But the goodness of the Lord rejoices my heart, and I love the things that God loves. A broken heart before God is beautiful. A lying tongue is despised. A majestic sunset is breathtaking because it testifies of God’s beauty. The murder of an innocent child grieves my heart. I love God’s Truth. I hate false words. I love pure things. I hate that which is defiled.

7. His Home is My Home
Because I am joined with Christ, I will forever live with Him in Heaven. There is a place prepared for me there even now! What a day of rejoicing that will be when I will live with my King in the light of His glory and grace! This world is not my home, I’m just passing through.

Many wonderful blessings are there that bind this relationship with the King of kings and Lord of lords, making it the greatest one I will ever have. It is so encouraging to also remember that the more time I spend at Jesus’ feet, the more my love for Him will grow, and the more like Him I will become. I do have such a long way to go. While the journey is sometimes long, and sometimes hard, always remember my dear fellow brothers and sisters, that none of it can be compared with the weight of glory that is to come.
